Maria Torres-Springer didn’t waste much time in securing new work. The former first deputy mayor in Mayor Eric Adams’ administration will return to the Ford Foundation as a senior fellow, the organization announced on Tuesday.
“Across this country, Americans are struggling to find secure footing as costs rise and the bedrocks of stability – affordable places to call home, good jobs, and pathways to opportunity – feel increasingly out of reach,” Torres-Springer said in a statement released by the private foundation. “I’m looking forward to once again working with the talented team at Ford, led by the indomitable Darren Walker, and with the broader philanthropic sector in pursuit of new solutions to some of today’s most pressing challenges.”
Torres-Springer, a longtime civil servant, took over as first deputy mayor during one of the more turbulent periods in Adams’ tenure last fall – following his indictment on corruption charges which the Trump Justice Department has now asked to be dismissed. Her appointment to the post restored some faith among those inside and outside City Hall in the administration. Last month, during what was arguably at times a more turbulent period for Adams, Torres-Springer and three other deputy mayors resigned.
