Above & Beyond 2019: Honoring 30 distinguished New York women

Last year was dubbed “the year of the woman” after a record-breaking number of women were elected to political office nationwide. In New York, 2018 brought two notable firsts: Letitia James became the first woman elected state attorney general, and Andrea Stewart-Cousins became the first woman to lead one of New York’s legislative chambers.

At City & State, we’ve been recognizing the accomplishments of women in the public sphere for years. In our annual Above & Beyond feature, we identify 30 women who have distinguished themselves through leadership in their fields and their contributions to society. This year’s honorees include elected officials as well as leaders who have made their mark in health care, law, real estate, business and the nonprofit sector.

Among them is a former federal judge who delivered a landmark ruling on the NYPD’s implementation of stop and frisk, an engineer who contributed to the development of Brooklyn Bridge Park and a nonprofit leader who played a significant role in the successful push for Fair Fares.
