Jordan Wright is planning to run for the Assembly in the district currently represented by Assembly Member Inez Dickens, according to a donation page recently set up by Wright’s campaign on the online fundraising platform ActBlue.
“Jordan J.G. Wright is not just another candidate – he’s a workhorse for Harlem and symbol of resilience, community advocacy, and the unwavering belief in the transformative power of public service,” the page reads. “He’s running to represent the 70th Assembly District to make sure our community has the resources it needs to keep Harlem vibrant, safe, and prosperous for generations to come.”
Wright confirmed to City & State that the ActBlue page is real but otherwise declined to comment on his campaign for Assembly District 70.
Wright – the son of Manhattan Democratic Party leader Keith Wright – most recently served as the campaign manager for New York City Council Member Yusef Salaam, who defeated both Dickens and Assembly Member Al Taylor to win his seat in the City Council.
Salaam’s City Council district overlaps with Assembly District 70 in Harlem. And that’s not the only tie that Wright has to the neighborhood. His father represented Assembly District 70 for nearly 24 years until retiring from public office at the end of 2016, following an ill-fated congressional run.
Dickens won an open race to replace the elder Wright in 2016, and she has represented the district since then. But the rumor in Harlem political circles is that she doesn’t plan to run for reelection this year. Dickens could not immediately be reached for comment.
