Next month, 20 Democratic presidential candidates will participate in the first of a series of primary debates – and it remains unclear if New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio will be among them.
The mayor himself has acknowledged that he may not make the cut, and a Politico analysis found that 19 candidates – not including de Blasio – had already qualified for the 20 slots available.
Nonetheless, de Blasio has been scrambling to secure enough donations to meet one of the two key criteria – receiving funds from at least 65,000 individuals. He said he had already met another threshold by hitting at least 1 percent in three national polls.
