Poll: Who will be NYC’s next mayor?

Update: Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams was the top vote-getter in our way-too-early online poll of the 2021 New York City mayoral field, garnering 54 percent of the vote, while Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. won a quarter of the vote. Nearly 2,300 votes were cast in the poll, which was entirely unscientific. (In a similar online poll for New York City public advocate, Ydanis Rodriguez was a frontrunner, even though he ultimately ended up in fifth place.)  Among the write-in candidates with multiple votes were former Mayor Michael Bloomberg and New York City Public Advocate-elect Jumaane Williams, even though neither has given any indication they will run. 

A year ago, City & State published an early assessment of the next New York City mayoral race, which won’t be decided until 2021. At the time, the names that came up the most often were New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer, New York City Public Advocate Letitia James, Bronx Borough President Rubén Díaz Jr. and Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams.

Now we’re another year closer – and we’ve been speculating about whether Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez could be in the mix come election time. Additionally, James has been elected attorney general and New York City Council Speaker Corey Johnson has emerged as a contender for the mayoralty as well.

So this week, we’re asking our readers: Who will be New York City’s next mayor?
