Who’s trending now in the NYC Council speaker’s race?

New York City Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez remains the top conversation driver on Twitter among the candidates for council speaker, but City Councilman Jumaane Williams gained ground on the frontrunner over the past two weeks.

Rodriguez had 2,386 mentions on Twitter between Sept. 29 and Oct. 12, while Williams was in a close second place with 2,302, according to an analysis by Global Strategy Group. During the previous two-week period Rodriguez also led the way, with 2,690 mentions.

Williams had the most followers on the social media website, with 17,954, and he also gained 81 new followers – more than any other candidate.

A tweet from City Councilman Mark Levine linking to his Crain’s op-ed about growing bus delays was the most retweeted over the past two weeks.

Global Strategy Group is also tracking mentions of Mayor Bill de Blasio by each candidate, as well as what they’re saying about him. City Councilman Ritchie Torres stood out for a number of positive tweets about the mayor.

The findings are from the latest installment assessing the social media buzz generated by each of the eight contenders for council speaker. Global Strategy Group is partnering with City & State to provide a biweekly social media analysis that tracks the Twitter metrics.
