Assemblyman Marcos Crespo Elected Bronx Democratic Chair

Barring the increments of the latest snowstorm to hit New York, the Bronx Democratic County Committee will meet today at 6 p.m. to elect Assemblyman Marcos Crespo as the party's new chair, replacing Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie. 

Crespo will be nominated by Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz and seconded by New York City Councilmember Vanessa L. Gibson and 85th Assembly district leader Antonia Figueroa. 

The vote to replace Heastie, who said he would resign as chair after he was elected Assembly Speaker, is expected to be unanimous.

According to numerous sources, Heastie was not involved in the selection process for his replacement.

Crespo, in a telephone conversation with City & State, confirmed the details reported here.

"I am not aware of any other candidate. I've reached out and spoken to everyone. I do expect a unanimous vote," Crespo said. 

City & State spoke with two Bronx politicos, three district leaders and one political operative who all indicated that Crespo worked hard and respectfully in securing the consensus for his candidacy. 

UPDATE: Crespo was elected by the Executive Committee of the Bronx Democratic County Committee this evening.

"I am honored to have been elected by my peers to serve as Chairman of the Bronx County Democratic Committee," Crespo said in a press release. "I look forward to building upon the progress made in recent years moving to bring more people to the Democratic party, increasing voter turnout, supporting more outstanding candidates and working in a unified fashion to champion the issues important to the member and all of the residents of the Bronx."
