High Achievement New York, a coalition of parents, teachers and business leaders who support Common Core standards, has named Stephen Sigmund as its new Executive Director.
In his new role at HANY, Sigmund will oversee communications, public policy and government outreach efforts for the organization which represents Association for a Better New York, Business Council of New York State, New York Urban League, Educators 4 Excellence, America Achieves and StudentsFirstNY.
“The future success of New York City as a global capital of innovation and culture depends upon providing our kids with the skills they need to create and achieve big dreams. Steve's deep knowledge, tremendous determination and smart perspective will be great assets for High Achievement New York and our efforts to improve educational opportunities for all of New York's students," said Jennifer Hensley, Executive Director of Association for a Better New York.
The groups goal is to support the Common Core standards and help students gain the skills they need to succeed in the college or career of their choice.
“The teachers and parents, business and community leaders behind High Achievement New York are an impressive group dedicated to improving education in this state. We all have a stake supporting great schools. We are determined to move past the failed policies that left our children ill-prepared to compete in global economy. New York State is making real investments in the higher standards associated with Common Core and we are here to support that vision,” Sigmund said in a statement.
Sigmund has recently been heading up the Global Gateway Alliance, pushing for improvements New York's airports. He will continue to work for GGA in an advisory role.
