Looks like status as an heir to the Levi Strauss & Co. fortune and a first name aren’t the only things Democratic Rep. Dan Goldman and Daniel Lurie share. As the New York representative easily secured his ticket back to Congress last week, Lurie – Goldman’s first cousin, once removed – was poised to notch a significant political win all the way on the other side of the country.

Lurie, a well-known California philanthropist and founder of anti-poverty nonprofit Tipping Point Community, is set to become mayor of San Francisco after successfully ousting incumbent London Breed last week through ranked-choice voting. The moderate Democrat campaigned on fighting crime, homelessness and drugs in the city, using his immense wealth to reach city residents frustrated with the status quo. He’d poured nearly $9 million of his own money into his campaign.

Like Goldman – a former Manhattan federal prosecutor – Lurie was elected without any prior experience holding public office. The two men are related through Lurie’s stepfather, Peter Haas, and Goldman’s grandmother, Rhoda Haas Goldman, who were siblings.
