Winners & Losers

This week’s biggest Winners & Losers

Who’s up and who’s down this week?

It’s brat summer in New York City… or it was until politicians got their hands on it. We were all enjoying a good laugh, reveling in the memes until Mayor Eric Adams jumped on the bandwagon. That led fellow Brooklyn pol and local gen Z whisperer Chi Ossé to declare that “BRAT SUMMER IS OFFICIALLY OVER.” But it didn’t stop City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams from announcing her own brat summer, though. And to be fair, there are some pols who really are having a brat summer. But the meme’s on thin ice since Adams.

WINNERS:

Jeffrey Maddrey -

“Fighting Crime, Protecting The Public and Sometimes Letting Each Other Off the Hook.” It looks likely that the NYPD’s top uniformed cop Jeffrey Maddrey will be let off without discipline after allegedly letting another cop without discipline. In the latter case, the former cop was arrested for pulling a gun on three young people in 2021, but Maddrey allegedly ordered the arrest be voided, according to a review by the Civilian Complaint Review Board. An NYPD judge dismissed the case against Maddrey this week.

Nick Langworthy -

As several college presidents learned last year, you upset Upstate Republicans at your peril. Embattled Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle didn’t get the memo. On Monday, Cheatle testified before a congressional committee about the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. Her testimony was widely considered a total trainwreck and Rep. Nick Langworthy introduced a resolution calling for her resignation. She was gone within 24 hours.

Eric Adams -

Mayor Eric Adams was surely enjoying his “summer of possibility” on Thursday as the Charter Revision Commission met and approved proposals that could limit the City Council’s power. Some of the proposals have pissed off City Council members, but others – related to clean streets, capital planning and modernization of city operations – won’t directly affect the council’s work.

LOSERS:

Linda Sun -

The FBI seems to have a thing for investigating New York politicians’ aides. As part of the investigation into Mayor Eric Adams, FBI agents raided the homes of Adams aides Rana Abbasova and Winnie Greco and former Adams fundraiser Brianna Suggs. Linda Sun, a former aide to Govs. Andrew Cuomo and Kathy Hochul, officially joined the party on Tuesday when the FBI searched her Long Island home. Sun has not been accused of wrongdoing, and the reason for the search is still unclear.

Erin Gall -

Few New York state judges have the gall to threaten to commit hate crimes – except for state Supreme Court Justice Erin Gall, who faces termination after allegedly threatening to shoot black teenagers during a 2022 outburst at a party. Police footage of the incident shows Gall saying that is just how “Mrs. G rolls,” but the state Commission on Judicial Conduct is recommending she not roll up to court anytime soon.

Arva Rice -

It’s official. New York City Civilian Complaint Review Board Chair Arva Rice is has resigned, three months after news broke the Adams administration had asked her to step down in wake of her criticizing police officials.  Rice, who has led the board since 2022,  said her commitment to holding police officers accountable for misconduct remains strong – and many see her forced departure as a step backward for NYPD accountability in the Adams administration.
