The Slant: Phil Walzak on what to expect from de Blasio’s campaign

We all remember Dante de Blasio’s afro from 2013, but what can we expect from New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s re-election campaign? De Blasio’s former press secretary Phil Walzak is now a senior adviser on the campaign. He joined the Slant podcast on Monday to talk about the mayor’s sometimes-adversarial relationship with the press and more. Walzak admitted there are some storylines about the mayor that drive him crazy.

“I know that I get emails from him after midnight frequently. I know that I take phone calls from him around 7 a.m. I know that he’s working nights, he’s working weekends, he’s working long hours,” Walzak said. “When you say something … that’s an unfair attack on his work ethic and how the man does his job, I think that engenders frustration.”

Walzak also talked about what de Blasio has to gain from fighting President Donald Trump, how the campaign deals with the Cuomo feud, and whether we can expect the afroed Dante to show up again during the campaign.
