City & State was honored recently by the New York Press Association with four awards in its 2013 Better Newspaper Contest. The magazine took home prizes for coverage of politics and elections, design, writing and video.
“I’m extremely proud of our talented and indefatigable staff for winning four New York Press Association awards for a second consecutive year,” City & State Editor-in-chief Morgan Pehme said. “It is immensely gratifying that NYPA has chosen to once again acknowledge our editorial team for fulfilling our daily commitment to providing the state’s political insiders with thoughtful and penetrating coverage of government, policy and industry.”
In the category of best coverage of elections and politics, Pehme, Nick Powell, Aaron Short and Jon Lentz won first place. Judges praised the City & State’s editorial team for its “outstanding coverage of governmental issues” and “great balance of indepth reporting,” and wrote about the magazine that it “speaks volume on the subject matter.”
Powell, City & State’s City Hall Bureau Chief, also took third place in the local government coverage category for his investigative cover story on the ties between Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano and the Hicksville Republican Club, run by Deputy County Executive Rob Walker.
Judges said Powell’s article was “a standout entry in a very competitive category” and that it illustrated “strong journalistic instincts.”
Multimedia Director Michael Johnson and Editor-in-chief Pehme won second place for best use of multimedia for a video series that augmented a print feature in City & State about the top ten mayors in New York City’s history. The videos served as mini documentaries on the top ten picks and featured experts’ takes on what made each leader a worthy pick.
Art Director Guillaume Federighi, who spearheaded City & State’s 2013 redesign and transformation into a magazine format, received an honorable mention for overall design excellence.
City & State publisher Andrew Holt said, “These awards affirm the dynamic quality of our magazine both online and in print, and point out precisely why City & State has become a must-read for anyone serious about following politics and policy in New York State.”
