Podcast: David Dinkins reflects, part 2

The legacies of David Dinkins and Rudy Giuliani are inextricably linked. Despite the latter’s assertion that he alone is responsible for the precipitous drop in crime in the mid-to-late ’90s, in reality Giuliani would never be able to make that claim had the crime rate not already begun to drop while Dinkins was still running City Hall.

Revisionist history notwithstanding, in Part 2 of our discussion with Dinkins on the Slant podcast, the former mayor shares some surprisingly candid thoughts on Giuliani’s evolution from the tough-talking law-and-order mayor to Donald Trump fanboy.

“I saw him on television at the Republican convention this year and he was ranting and raving, I had never seen him quite like that,” Dinkins said. “Since then I’ve seen him on television quite a few times introducing Trump at various spots, and I say to my friends, ‘did you see Rudy on television?’ They said, ‘yeah.’ I said, ‘See, I told you.’”

Dinkins also shares his thoughts on the 2016 presidential race, and why he supported Hillary Clinton in 2008 over Barack Obama. And we wrap up our discussion by touching on the philosophy of community policing and why he thinks the policy can work in New York City.
