The dust has settled in New York’s 13th Congressional District, and in the aftermath of an occasionally heated Democratic primary to succeed Rep. Charles Rangel, the presumptive Congressman, state Sen. Adriano Espaillat, has spent the better part of the last few weeks trying to heal any remaining wounds.
While Espaillat could make history as the first Dominican-born member of Congress, his primary victory likely marks the end of African-American representation in the 13th District for the first time in nearly 50 years. As a result, Espaillat has made efforts to ensure he will represent all neighborhoods in Upper Manhattan and the Bronx equally, reaching out to Rangel and Keith Wright, the runner-up in the primary contest, and doing community outreach throughout the district.
Espaillat joins us on this week’s episode of The Slant Podcast to discuss the tight primary race and his plans for bridging the ethnic gaps in an increasingly diverse district. Espaillat also touches on filling Rangel’s outsized shoes, how he would deal with a Trump or Clinton presidency, and his anti-gentrification plan that he hopes will help keep Harlem and other parts of his district affordable in the near future.
