Making Health Care Available and Affordable to All New Yorkers
New York has done more than any state to expand access to healthcare and make it available to everyone. As we continue into the next phase fighting COVID-19, making sure every New Yorker has access to quality healthcare has only become more critical. Several high-profile measures have been taken on the state and city levels to make sure New Yorkers are able to attain and keep health insurance. Meanwhile, debate continues over whether single-payer insurance is right for New York. What does it mean for New York to tackle these issues, and how will it impact patients, primary care providers, insurers, and the overall healthcare marketplace? Where does equity come into play here as we know health disparities have come to light?

Innovative Health Programs and Services in New York
New York’s health systems and services have been turned upside down in the last year with COVID 19. The health facilities became overrun and staff overwhelmed, issues with insurance emerged and various health services could barely keep up with the demand. Technology has become a bigger factor in terms of telehealth and telemedicine, electronic processing, shared data, etc. This panel will discuss forward-looking measures that are happening right now such as the role of broadband in expanding access to digital and connected health, controlling the spread of the pandemic through tracing, response times to future urgent health crises, best practices for data security, and so much more.

Tackling Mental Health in New York
Among many other things, the coronavirus has placed substantial mental health burdens on New Yorkers, delays in life saving treatments, many desperately needed children’s services came to a halt, and as we know, the elderly populations were especially hit especially hard. A $2 trillion stimulus package passed in March included $425 million for mental health and substance-use disorder programs, which proves we are on our way to dealing with some issues. But we have also seen that economic status, physical environment, education level and more can impact people’s health. We are also seeing a growth in drug abuse, homelessness, crime on the subways and the streets. Advances are still needed in NY to handle mental health challenges of children of the homeless, foster care, LGBT, aging, etc.

Community Engagement with Aging and Vulnerable Populations
Community engagement can help empower communities in promoting COVID-19 prevention and containment as well as improve quality of life in all areas among the vulnerable and New York’s growing older adult populations. These partnerships have the organizational and technical experience to reach older and more vulnerable community members and address unmet needs. How can New York work with community leaders to address the needs of community members who were high users of the police, emergency, criminal justice, and healthcare systems.
