9:15 am   The Future of New York Health Care

City and state leaders are exploring how to ensure that all New Yorkers maintain access to health insurance. What will the future hold in terms of tech and innovation? The collapse of lawmakers efforts to demolish the Affordable Care Act had created an opening for bipartisan work to support health insurance markets and protect consumers against sharp increases in premiums.  We will hear from insurance companies, hospitals/all kinds of healthcare providers, and technology companies, on where healthcare in NY is going.

Speakers:

  • TC Westcott, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, The New York Academy of Sciences (moderator)
  • Senator Kemp Hannon, Chair, Health Committee
  • Assemblymember Richard Gottfried, Chair, Health Committee
  • Stanley Brezenoff, Interim President and CEO, NYC Health + Hospitals

Innovative models are being used across the nation to improve the experience for New York’s aging and most vulnerable groups. Discussions will range from long term care, to insurance options, to nutrition enhancements, to caregiver and assistance resources.  This panel of advocates, clinical staff, and health care organizations will highlight initiatives which can positively impact the retirement, assisted living and in-home care services.

Speakers:

  • Erin Billups, Health Reporter, Spectrum News NY1 (moderator)
  • Council Member Margaret Chin, Chair, Committee on Aging

10:45 am   New York Policy on Marijuana

The current drug policy outlook is mixed for New York, where a strict medical marijuana program exists but recreational use of the drug is a nonstarter at the Capitol.  Last year, the state loosened restrictions in its medical marijuana law but, there was no sign the state is in any hurry to join eight other states in embracing full legalization. However, the Governor recently said that New York should eliminate penalties currently handed down to individuals caught possessing small amounts of marijuana.  Issues such as restrictions in medical, recreational use and criminal implications will be discussed.

Speakers:

  • Jeff Coltin, Staff Reporter, City & State (moderator)
  • Senator Diane J. Savino, Sponsor, New York State’s Medical Marijuana Program
  • Senator Liz Krueger, Sponsor, Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act
  • Nicholas Vita, Chief Executive Officer and Vice Chairman, Columbia Care
