What is the state of airports and aviation in New York?

JFK and LaGuardia are among the busiest airports in the world, serving as a frontline hub for New York’s tourist economy. We’ve seen multibillion-dollar investments to improve the infrastructure and customer experience at these sites. Thousands of airport service workers, like myself, continue to play our essential roles to keep our airports safe and running, just like we did during COVID.

What role do you play in supporting New York's economy?

I am a security officer, and I work alongside terminal cleaners, cabin cleaners, baggage handlers, wheelchair agents, cargo handlers and more, who perform a wide variety of essential jobs that make airline travel possible. We keep airports secure, safe, clean and customer-friendly. Millions of travelers who are a major part of New York’s economy can’t fly the friendly skies without the tireless efforts of airport workers on the ground.  

What are you looking forward to in 2024?

In 2018, the Port Authority established a minimum wage policy for airport workers that created the foundation for stronger, safer airports for workers and travelers alike. In 2024, we look forward to the Port Authority implementing further increases to the minimum wage and expanding health care benefits and paid time off. With improved standards, we’ll continue to see progress in a stable workforce that translates into safer airports, better quality service for travelers and a more robust aviation and tourism economy for New York.
